Important message for “My Digital Studio” owners

If you own Stampin' Up!®'s My Digital Studio software, it is important to keep it up-to-date with updates as they are released.  (For purposes of this article I'm using the term "update" to mean "software updates" (which are free, and recommended for best performance) – and I'm NOT referring to downloadable images which are released monthly and which can be purchased through my online store - and are optional, of course.)

So – let's talk about "SOFTWARE UPDATES".  Just like with any other piece of software, updates are an integral part of maintaining best performance.  And thankfully, My Digital Studio updates are free.  There have been 2 updates released so far, but Stampin' Up! has informed us that too many software owners have not yet downloaded and installed their updates.  So Stampin' Up! has just announced to us a 2-part plan:

Part 1)  We (demonstrators) have been urged to remind our customers of the need to keep their software up-to-date, and

Part 2) Today, Stampin' Up! will begin sending reminder emails to all owners of the software who have either a) registered their software directly with Stampin' Up!, or b) ordered through Stampin' Up!'s online ordering system, or c) worked with a demonstrator who has input their customers' email addresses into her online Customer Manager system.  (Which I do, unless you specifically ask me not to.)

I am pleased that Stampin' Up! is being diligent in their attempts to reach out to owners of My Digital Studio to inform of the importance of keeping their software updated.  If you receive an email from Stampin' Up! about this, I expect it will include instructions for how to apply your updates.  (They must be done sequentially, so if you have not installed either one yet, you'll need to apply both in two separate actions.)

But in case you don't get that email, here are instructions for updating your software:

  • Begin by identifying the version of My Digital Studio (MDS) you currently have installed.  You can determine this by opening your software and clicking HELP, then choose "About My Digital Studio".  If your version is below 1.0.2, you need to update your software.  Continue with the following instructions:
  • To perform your first update, (to version 1.0.1), click here to get started.  (Or to find this page yourself, go to www.Stampinup.com, then choose:  Our Products > Product Lines > My Digital Studio > Updates.)  Choose the appropriate option (PC or MAC), and install that update.
  • After you have installed this initial update you'll be able to update your software to subsequent versions (currently 1.0.2) by click the Help option from inside your software and selecting Check for Updates option.  Don't forget to install the current 1.0.2 version if your version is earlier than that one!

Don't forget to update all your copies of MDS (in case you have installed it on the 2 computers in the same home that the license permits), and don't forget to go to the Help option periodically to check for further updates in the future!

Steffi’s Memorial Service Brochures

2010-Mar-30-007_edited-1  This is an overview of the techniques and process I used while designing the memorial cards that were at Steffi’s memorial service in March.  It is not meant to be an all-encompassing explanation, but if you have basic familiarity with stamping techniques and Stampin’ Up!® supplies, it should be enough to make sense.

But before I begin I need to thank all the many hands who helped me color and assemble the 95 of these we made.  Given the total production hours put into this project, I calculate that each card took about 1-1/4 hours to assemble – not counting the layout time of the inside pages.  So while I will refer to “I” throughout this article as I describe my “creating” process, I also wish to acknowledge all those who helped for so many hours to bring these into reality.  Without all that help, this project would have been impossible.

I began with 2 of Steffi’sSteffi_flowers favorite colors (green and yellow) – interpretted in Certainly Celery and Barely Banana.  Steffi also loved the Big Shot (especially for its texture capabilities) and border punches.  And her favorite ribbon was our Organza ribbon (which only comes in Whisper White).  So I knew right away that those elements would play significant parts in these projects.

The idea for daisies came from the main floral arrangement that her husband Rick had selected….. a big gorgeous basket of yellow and white daisies.  One of his requirements was that the overall effect be of a happy tone, rather than dark and sad.  Which was fine with me; I like to stamp “happy” – and that was much more “Steffi” anyway.

The base of this card needed to be bigger and command more “presence” than a traditional 1/4 sheet size card, so I experimented with various height and width combos until I settled on 5-7/8 x 5″ (when folded).  That meant that it would require an entire sheet of cardstock for each card base.

Two additional layers were used on the front – a narrow strip of Barely Banana near the left folded edge, and the main layer, Whisper White.  Both were texturized along their left edges with Stampin’ Up!’s cutter kit, another of Steffi’s favorite tools.  The Certainly Celery card base was cut and folded so that the front section was a little narrower than the back.  This allowed the scalloped (punched) edge of the white layer to lay against the green of the base (inside back of the card) – and give a lace-like feel to the edge.Daisy_embossing_die

The most unique part of the design was the technique I used for embossing the daisies.  It began by cutting out a whole bunch of the smallest daisies available on the Flower Daisies #2 Bigz die from Naturals cardstock.  (I wanted a fairly thick cardstock for this project.)  I then stacked up and adhered 3 together to make an even thicker daisy….. repeating this for a total of seven 3-layer daisies.  Then I played and played and played around with spacing until I ended up with the arrangement at the right.  Specifically, I wanted to make sure I captured the centers of each of the daisies (for best visual balance), and I needed to leave exactly enough room at the lower right side for the words.  Once satisfied with the layout, I adhered the daisies onto a piece of scrap CS (which just coincidentally happened to be yellow, although the color was irrelevent).

The rectangle outline is where my white layer (with prepunched right-hand border) would lay – face up. Then I made a “sandwich” for the Big Shot that stacked up in this order:

  • Texturz Impressions Pad (top element)
  • Texturz Silicone Rubber pad
  • Whisper White CS (scallop border already punched) – face up
  • Homemade daisy die (shown at right)
  • 2 layers of CS for shims
  • 1 layer longboard chipboard
  • Multipurpose platform (bottom element)

This sandwich was then passed through the Big Shot (one-card-at-a-time, of course) to emboss the daisies onto the white cardstock.

The next step was to color the daisy’s centers.  For that process I created a custom template from the same daisy image cut from a piece of window sheet, and then used a sponge dauber to ink the centers of each daisy – again, one daisy at a time.

The next step was to sponge green around each daisy to make it “pop”.  At first I began by making a mask of regular cardstock cut with the same Bigz daisy die.  But those daisy masks were only lasting long enough to sponge one or two daisies before falling apart, so I quickly changed to window sheet material for those masks as well.  I used a stamping sponge and Certainly Celery ink – and only stroked color outwards from the centers of each daisy.  It was important to make sure the daisy mask was properly aligned with the image on the card front – and held tightly in place so it would not slip.  This meant perpetual green fingers for several days, lol!  Each card ended up colored slightly different from any other of course, but the goal was to leave white in the upper right-hand corner (for “white space”), and blend gradually downwards into the area where the words would later be stamped.

The words were kinda custom, too.  The “We Remember” stamp didn’t really start out saying that.  Rather, it was an old, old Stampin’ Up! stamp that I’d kept in my “stash” for years (still unmounted), and it originally said the words: “Remember when”.  (Intended by SU many years ago to be used for scrapbooking.)  Well, I wanted something that read “Remembering” or “We Remember”, yet I had nothing of those exact words.  A stamp-by-stamp search through my entire collection revealed that I didn’t even have the word “We” in a size large enough to work.  So I cut up the “when” part of this as-yet-unmounted stamp into 4 letters and fashioned my own “We” in front of the word “Remember”.  (And then I patted myself on the back for my cleverness, lol!)

I’d also ordered a custom stamp through Stampin’ Up! for Steffi’s name (“Yours and Mine” 3-line text, although obviously only needed 1 line), and then used Certainly Celery craft ink with clear embossing powder for all the words.  (And a Stamp-a-ma-jig, too, of course!)

The final step to finish up the cover was to wrap the ribbon around and tie in a flat knot.

Perhaps I’ll scan and show more of the inside of these sometime, and share about the guest book, too – but this article has grown plenty long for now.  Again, many thanks to the many loving hands that helped make this “from the heart” project possible!  What a lovely way to honor a stamper we’ll never forget!

5 more tips for using your Clear-Mount stamps

Clear-mount-stamps

After a really fun trip to see my new grandson in Idaho, I am home and trying to catch up from where I left off.  One of those things was to post my remaining 5 tips to help you love your clear-mount stamps!  (See my initial 5 tips here.)  So here are those next 5 tips:

  1. Don't use Stazon Cleaner on your clear-mount stamps…… or at least not while they're still mounted to the block.  The Stazon Cleaner can cause damage to the acrylic block.
  2. Trying to decide which blocks to order?  I recommend beginning your block collection by purchasing the entire bundle of 9 blocks (item #118491).  This will give you one each of any block size you may need – while saving more than 10% of the cost of acquiring them individually.  But if you tend to work with a lot of stamps going at the same time (like I do), then you may eventually want to add another of each of the 4 smaller sizes, too.
  3. Have you noticed the thumbnail images on the spines of your clear-mount storage cases?  This clever and useful feature will help you keep track of the images you have in your collection – whether you stack or stand the cases on a shelf, or line them up in a deep drawer.
  4. Your Stampin' Up!® clear-mount stamps arrive die cut, as do today's wood-mount stamps.  While this is just fine for the majority of stampers, if you happen to be fussy like I am, you may prefer to trim them closer yet.  If so, be sure to do your trimming AFTER you've applied the labels – being careful not to undercut the supporting foam.  The foam layer must remain the same size – if not larger than – the rubber layer.
  5. Don't leave your clear-mount stamps on their blocks for long, long periods of time.  I once left a stamp on its block for a couple of weeks, and when I was ready to remove it, the label came right off the stamp and stayed on the block!  Talk about "cling" power, lol!

If you still have any remaining questions about Stampin' Up!'s Clear-Mount stamps, please click the comment link (below), and just ask!

5 tips for using your Stampin’ Up!® Clear Mount stamps

Clear-mount-stamps

Today I thought I'd share some tips for using your new Stampin' Up!® Clear Mount Stamps:

  1. Press the stamp firmly onto the acrylic block for a few moments to give the cling backing a chance to adhere.  (Remember the stamp has a "cling" surface, NOT "adhesive", so you must press it into place.)  Also, do the same when you return the stamps to their storage container so they'll adhere to the inner surface of the case and not tumble all over inside – or worse yet, fly out at you when you open it!
  2. When you clean these stamps on your Stampin' Scrub, be careful not to over-saturate the pad with Stampin' Mist.  If you work up a foam, it may interfere with the cling properties.
  3. Take it easy with the "scrubbing" action.  If you've developed a strong-arm scrubbing technique over time with your wood-mount stamps, remember this temporary cling will require developing a more gentle habit; intense scrubbing will pop the stamp right off the block!  And for those really tiny stamps that will hardly tolerate ANY scrubbing, it's probably just easier to remove them from the block altogether before cleaning 'em.
  4. Grease from your fingers, or dust, glitter, or pet hair may eventually interfere with the clingability of these stamps.  But a quick gentle bath with some dishwashing liquid (such as Dawn®), followed by a good rinse and drying with a lint-free towel should fix that right up.
  5. Your Clear Mount stamps come ready to mount and use as soon as you punch them out from the rubber sheet and pull off the protective tab from the back.  But most people like to add their optional labels, too.  If you choose to put the included optional labels on your Clear Mount stamps don't handle the label with your fingers as you apply it.  Instead, remove the protective cover from the label, but leave the label itself ON THE LABEL SHEET.  Then after you've removed the protective cover from the back of the stamp, lay the stamp down onto the label, matching the shape of the stamp to the outer shape of the label. (Additional tip:  if you have trouble getting the protective cover off the label while it's still on the sheet, carefully work the tip of your Paper Snips into the slit in the middle of the protective cover, then make a little snip to the edge of one end of that slit. This will make it easier to grab 'hold of that protective cover to remove it.)
